The Roller Derby Revival:

Across America, thousands of women are leading double lives. By day, they are business women, mothers, accountants, nurses, and waitresses. But by night, they are athletes participating in a revival of one of America's most exciting sports: roller derby. Utah alone has 6 Women's Roller Derby leagues and it is estimated that there are about 700 leagues in the nation. Leagues are usually made up of 20-100 skaters and sometime broke into multiple teams.

Is This Like the Roller Derby in the 1970's?

The roller derby you or your parents remember is quite a bit different than what is common today. First, most leagues, including Wasatch Roller Derby, skate on a flat track rather than a banked track. Flat track derby is just as exciting and provides seating within “skater-in-your-lap” distance for those who want to be part of the action. In addition to the track, another difference from “old-school derby” is the theatrical nature of roller derby. The sport no longer is focused on choreographed fighting, but rather the blood, sweat, and tears of strong, athletic women with incredible skating ability. What you see on the track is not planned and is a result of passionate women working very hard to win the game.
